Primary Care Society

Founded in 2012 in response to the physician shortage, the Fort St James Primary Care Not-For-Profit Society is a nine-member volunteer board. Until the summer of 2024 the society managed the Health Centre in partnership with Northern Health. They grew what was once a small clinic into a space that is home to an integrated team of the medical staff and the Northern Health Inter-Professional Team. The Health Centre is currently transitioning to being operated by Northern Health with The Primary Care Society playing a supporting role in community initiatives.

The robust care model developed during the growth process of the Health Centre is a valuable asset that Northern Health continues to follow as they transition to managing the Health Centre. This model has created a foundation and structure that has paved the way for full integration with the Inter-Professional team within all our communities. Working cooperatively with Northern Health to improve the health of our communities as a collective continues to be paramount to the Society.

Local membership partners who have oversight of the board include: The District of Fort St. James, Mayor Martin Alphee, Regional District Bulkley Nechako “Area C” Judy Greenaway, and Nak’azdli Whut’en, Chief Aileen Prince.

As we diligently support the transition of the management of the Fort St. James Health Centre we are also working to support the opening of the new Stuart Lake Hospital. We are looking forward to the relocation of our community’s health care professionals in January of 2025. It is exciting to see this project in its final stages.
