Fort St. James is a community with a population of approximately 5000 including First Nations and surrounding rural communities. The community of Fort St. James is located on the shores of beautiful Stuart Lake which is about 90 km in length and 10 km in width. There are numerous other lakes and rivers in the area where the fishing is great. The community boasts a fantastic downhill and cross-country ski area and a 9-hole golf course overlooking Stuart Lake. Sporting opportunities for children and adults are plentiful – curling, ice hockey, speed skating, figure skating, soccer, tennis, softball, hiking, mountain biking, and water sports to name only a few.

The economic base of the community is heavily dependent on the forest industry and more recently mining. The community has a relaxed feel to it. The population is hard working and culturally diverse.

The climate is typical of British Columbia’s northern interior. The winters are snowy with an average temperature of -10°C/14°F. The summer climate hovers just under 20°C/68°F, give or take. Annual average rainfall is a little less than 29cm/11in, while the average snowfall is a little more than 200cm/79in.

There are 5 churches in the community, of a variety of denominations. The community has 3 Elementary Schools, and 1 High School. Post Secondary Education is available through College of New Caledonia with a beautiful new campus located in the community.
